Position

Overall responsibility
The Communications Officer will be responsible for communicating key messages to defined target audiences to establish goodwill and understanding between the Youth Crime Watch of Liberia (YCWL) and its partner. This is proactively achieved by generating positive coverage through effective media relations with broadcast, print and new media. A key role will be to monitor the publicity that is generated on behalf of the YCWL, as well as liaising on an everyday basis with the program management team to update and report on the success of the publicity.

Job Description

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

Campaigns and Communications Materials Prepare written materials for public awareness campaigns. Maintain a range of publications to meet communications goals.

Key Tasks:

•    Identify target audiences.

•     Identify communication strategies and appropriate communication channels

  • Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. Decide who, where, and when to disseminate
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, posters, media releases, promotional materials, banners and organization website
  • Coordinate webpage maintenance—ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly
  • Maintain e-Newsletter mailing list, and seek to increase readership/engagement
  • Take/edit photos, record video, capture testimonials, live tweet events
  • Develop PowerPoint presentations of YCWL projects

Manage Social Media Pages

a. Consistently update YCWL Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn pages with relevant, shareable content appropriate for each particular medium.

 b. Increase fans, followers, and overall community engagement

Media Relations

Maintain and develop links with local and international media outlets to facilitate good communication and ensure fair and accurate coverage of YCWL activities.

Key Tasks:

• Maintain current contact details of relevant journalists.

• Prepare media statements.

 • Respond to media enquiries.

 Events Management

Assist in the coordination of some market & social research industry events and provide advice to YCWL members organizing other events.

Key Tasks:

• Assist with the coordination of the event including guest list, invitations, venue, seating, tents, catering, sound system, speeches, publicity etc.

• Provide advice to YCWL staff or committee members organizing an event on all of the above.

 Measure Analytics

a. Record weekly and monthly statistics for website, e-Newsletter, and social media pages as well as community presentations and media appearances to measure impact and set goals to increase engagement and overall effectiveness

Administration

Assist in office administration.

Key Tasks:

 • Booking advertisement space in publications

• Maintain and file PR reports

• Keep minutes of meetings attended as required

• Maintain a media and government contact list

Qualifications: 

  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
  • Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence”
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  •  Passion for international travel, different cultures, and making a difference in the world
